Beyond Pixel Pushing: Designing a B2C Mobile App from the Ground Up

So... Horses??

It is definitely not the first industry that comes to mind when you think of tech startups, but as a designer and the owner of Romano Agency, I am always looking for unique challenges.

When clients reach out for freelance product design, they often ask: "What is your actual experience with building products?"

My answer is always the same: I bring a whole lot more to the table than just pure design. Product design isn't just that narrow part of the pipeline where you push pixels. It's about deeply understanding markets, applying industry best practices, and diving out of the narrow scope of the product into the broader world of the brand and the company as a whole. It requires a relentless determination about every single detail the users feel, see, or hear.

Over the years, I became so invested in my users and their end-to-end experience that I decided it was time to start shipping products of my own.

Finding the Right Problem to Solve

A few months ago, my wife, a horse girl since she can recall- returned to her lifelong passion for riding. At the barn, her trainer, Oded Locker, shared a long-held dream with us: an application designed to help professional equestrian athletes and trainers manage their clients and complex horse care needs at scale.

We realized we had a unique opportunity. We decided to partner up, bringing together a perfect storm of expertise: Oded's decade of training and IDF tech advisory experience, Guy's product management background and deep equestrian roots, and my UI/UX and brand design expertise through Romano Agency.

Crafting the Lockerz.horse Experience

For Lockerz.horse, We led the end-to-end design lifecycle. Our focus was on transforming a complex operational bottleneck into a seamless digital experience. The scope included:

  • Brand Identity: Developing a cohesive, modern visual identity that resonates with both traditional equestrians and modern tech users.

  • Web Design: Building a high-converting website to drive our upcoming launch.

  • UI/UX Design & User Journeys: Carefully crafting the mobile application's interface to address the very real, complex daily challenges of horse trainers. The goal was to build intuitive user flows that save time rather than add administrative friction.

Growth, Validation, and Whatโ€™s Next

Building a B2C mobile app from the ground up has been an incredible process. Stepping into the shoes of a co-founder has taught us a massive amount about market validation, B2C dynamics, mobile app technology, and product analytics.

We firmly believe we are becoming better product designers by the day simply by meeting new markets, taking on fresh challenges, and exploring new ideas outside of my traditional comfort zone.

We have officially started beta testing Lockerz.horse with real horses, trainers, and clients. These are incredibly exciting times - proving that with the right team, you can take an idea drawn out on a napkin and ship a reality.

Lockerz.horse is coming soon to the App Store and Play Store.
